JANUARY/FEBRUARY- 2007 NEWS AND INFORMATION

From the  Executive Officer

IN CAMP IN DAHLONEGA

TO ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE STONE MOUNTAIN HISTORICAL REENACTORS INC.

First, thank you all for entrusting this position to me.  I have big shoes to fill and suspect it will take some time to grow into them.

More years ago than I care to think about, I was sitting across a campfire from Mike Couch joining the 42nd Georgia Company B.  Even then, I knew there was something special about this unit.  Across the years I’ve been proven correct (delightfully so!)  It seems that our camaraderie, family support, and strong sense of friendship has kept me here for almost 24 years.

2007!!   My New Year’s Resolution reflects the obvious changes taking place in our hobby.  WE ARE SIMPLY GETTING OLDER and aging out!  So RECRUITING must be our main focus.  Any ideas, suggestions, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated, as I believe we must find a way to tell others who we are and what we do in order to grow the rank and file.

By next month, I hope to have details about changing the layout of Frontier Days at Stone Mountain to showcase our fine members.  If we get permission for the changes, I’ll be depending on many of you to come out and support this effort.  Perhaps we can make this the family event it used to be with fun and fellowship.

Until the 1st drill, I’ll wish you a Happy New Year filled with peace and prosperity.

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED,

LAMAR MCDOUGAL

From the Captain

Gentlemen & Ladies of the 42nd Georgia,

The 2007 reenacting season has finally arrived!  I, for one, am happy to see the season starting.  We are just a couple of weeks away from our first drill.  Now is a good time to get out the equipment and make sure everything is in good working order.   Also, review your Hardee’s School of the Soldier and School of the Company.  We’ll be putting those to use soon.  Additionally, please review the skirmish drill.  We will hopefully get to put that to use again this year.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to our outgoing president Eric Beckmann for his dedication to duties and hard work over the past few years, as president, vice president, and 1st sergeant.  It’s not an easy job, especially when you’re on the road as much as Eric is.  Also, thanks to outgoing 1st sergeant Nils Ohberg.  Nils has worked diligently both as 1st sergeant and corporal.   As anyone knows that takes any type of position, once you take an executive position or field command, this becomes more than a hobby.

Congratulations are in order to our new president Lamar McDougal.  Lamar has been in the unit for a long long time and has seen the hobby evolve and the 42nd evolve over that time.  I’m sure he’ll do a great job.  Congratulations to our new 1st sergeant Jack Hulsey, 1st corporal Don Driver, and 2nd corporal Garrett Holcombe.   And lastly, congratulations to our repeat folks, vice president Jim Mabe, treasurer Ric Palmer, and quartermaster sergeant Chris Jones.  Either you really enjoy your jobs or are just gluttons for punishment.

At this past battles of Atlanta, the 42nd was fortunate to be able to participate as skirmishers on both days.  While it is important to also fight with the main body, I’ll still push the battalion leadership to do some different things.  I think this keeps everyone fresh and makes the battles more interesting.  I don’t know about you, but I’d have to place the battles of Atlanta 2006 as one of my favorites.  This is another reason it’s important to keep practicing skirmishing and other things.  It can provide us with more options.

That’s all I have for this month.  See you at drill in a couple of weeks.

Your obedient servant,

Rick Fallaw, Captain

42nd In Cyberspace!

Visit Our Website Often!!

For any of you that have visited the web lately, there have been some changes.  I’ll be making more soon.  Additionally, I’ll also be especially adding more photos and more photo pages.  For those that just have dial-up, I’ll see what I can do to keep the photo sizes down.  I also fixed the guestbook.  It seems that the spammers figured a way around the web host provider’s security.  I was told to use another guest book.  This didn’t work either.  So, I found a way to have our original one operational and at the same time make it hard for the spammers to figure out.  It’s been operational for a few weeks with no spam.  Keep your fingers crossed.

If any of you have had any email changes, please send me your new address so I can update the 42nd Georgia aliases.

GVB News

There will be a leadership conference held at the Nash Farm Battlefield in Lovejoy, Georgia, on Saturday, January 27, at 9:00 am.  This is open to everyone in the battalion.  The GVB elections for 2007 officers will also be held (just company commanders are involved with this).  You’re welcome to attend and contribute.  It’s sort of like a town hall meeting (except for the elections).  I’ll be in attendance and others in the unit have indicated they are coming also.  This is done in civilian attire, unless you want to drill with some of the other folks.  I don’t know what time it will be over.  I’ll give a summary to the unit at the 42nd’s drill which will be held the next day.

From the Captain's Wife

Dearest Ladies and Gentlemen of the 42ND Georgia

Please accept my most sincere appreciation for the extremely generous Target gift card which the unit presented for Violet at the Christmas party. Rick and I were pleasantly surprised and a greatly honored to receive such a significant gift for our little miracle baby. I regret that Violet had a stomach bug on the day of the party, which she was nice enough to share with her Daddy, Lamar McDougal, and several others. However, the gift card came in handy immediately in that, following the party, we fled to Target and got some Pedialyte and other items to help us mend our ailing little one!

To those of you who spearheaded the effort, I say “thank you” from the bottom of my heart. To all who donated toward the gift, I say “thank you” from all that is within me. Rick and I consider the unit to be our true extended family – and you showed us that your feelings reciprocate by your wonderful act of thoughtfulness and generosity on December 3RD.

Most sincerely and respectfully submitted,

April Fallaw
