SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER- 2002 NEWS AND INFORMATION

From the Chief Executive Officer

IN CAMP NEAR LILBURN

TO ALL MEN AND WOMEN OF THE STONE MOUNTAIN HISTORICAL REENACTORS INC.

GREETINGS!

This has been my most busy year ever.  I finally finished my reenactment of a first century dairy merchant and man of the council.  I thought things would calm down but I was wrong. So if you think you are busy listen to this.

I work for Northwest Airlines as an Equipment Service Employee. I also work for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. I am on the Shop Committee, which handles the legal end of contracts. I am the Safety Committee Chair, which is the other end of the legal relating to O.S.H.A.,etc..  I was also elected as the Recording Sec. for Local Lodge 2665, which handles all the rest of the possible union problems.

Just when I thought my time was freeing up I was called to the Home Office for Arbitration Cases.  This is similar to the Supreme Court only on the Union side of Federal Law.  Added to this there were weddings, The Atlanta Passion Play, house refinancing and a number of other things that I cannot recall now.  If this makes you tired just remember it makes me feel like screaming.

I have missed all of you.  Now you know why a Reenactment is such a great stress relief for me.

YOUR SERVANT,

CECIL HAYGOOD

From the Captain

Gentlemen & Ladies,

First of all, I would like to apologize for being remiss in getting out a newsletter. As most of you know I’ve been busy with pressing personal business. This spring, I had to also miss the Battle of Resaca and the June drill at Stone Mountain, but as usual the 42nd GA came through and made a great showing and continued the tradition of the unit.

We are about to kick off the fall campaign season of reenacting, but before we do, I would like each one of you to stop and remember one of our fallen comrades in arms. For those of you who may not have heard, we lost one of our oldest reenacting brothers on May 20 of this year. Robert Louis Ziegenhain, better known to us as “PaPa Z”, was 54 years old and died as a result of a massive stroke. He will be sorely missed in our reenacting community.

The campaign season begins with the Battle of Tunnel Hill, September 6-8, and it appears that we have a good many registered to attend. I am looking forward to seeing each and every one of you in the field. After a stressful summer, I know I need it.

The September Drill will be held on the 22nd. We should have a renewed interest in the drill because Stone Mountain Park has increased our compensation from $75 to $100 per appearance.   This is long overdue but no one should think that we are looking a gift horse in the mouth.  Let’s be glad we got it and say thanks to Robert Winebarger for his kind consideration and support.

The 5th and 6th of October is our own Elisha Winn Festival. This is an event sponsored by the Gwinnett Historical Society and since we portray a unit from Gwinnett County we should support this effort whole-heartedly. This is not considered a maximum effort event, but I hope that as many of you who can be there, will be there.

Jonesboro is our next even on the calendar and I hope to see everyone there, as it is an event that supports the Georgia Volunteer Battalion.

In place of drill this month, we will be having a work weekend at the Horsepark in Conyers for the final preparation of the battlefield for the Atlanta Campaign, which will be the following weekend. If you can’t make both days, please try to make at least one of them. Arrive as early as you can, somewhere around 9:00 am and stay as late as you can (dark thirty if possible).

Remember the Atlanta Campaign is a “MAXIMUM EFFORT” event for our unit, we are co-supporters of this event along with the 125th Ohio.

Your obedient servant,

Capt. Ric Palmer

42nd In Cyberspace!

Email aliases have been set up for eleven members of the 42nd Georgia using 42ndgeorgia.com as the domain. It is the first letter of your first name and your last name, (Example: Eric Beckmann, ebeckmann@42ndgeorgia.com). The reason for having these is that when you want to send an email to someone in the unit and cannot remember their regular email address. If you can remember their name and 42ndgeorgia.com, you should be able to send them an email.

I sent an email to all of the members for whom I have email addresses and so far eleven have responded. If I have missed you and you want to have your email set up, please send me an email at rfallaw@42ndgeorgia.com. I'll set it up for you. It will take about 24 hours to become active. If any of you change your regular email address, please notify me so I can make the change for the email alias. If not, any emails sent to your email alias will be rejected back to the person that sent it.

I have added a "current roster" to the web site. It is comprised of your rank, name, and email address (alias).   You can click on the email address of the person in the email column and send them an email. If you don't want to have your email address (alias) put on the web page, please let me know and I'll leave that spot blank.

Your obedient servant,

2nd Cpl. Rick Fallaw

An Author In Our Midst

Swallowed Up in Victory - by Lee Passarella

The 42nd Georgia is pleased to announce that one of its members, Lee Passarella, has written a book that was just published entitled "Swallowed Up in Victory."

Swallowed Up in Victory is a narrative of the last year of the American Civil War. It follows the action surrounding the first attacks on Petersburg through the surrender at Appomattox. The book traces the history of the siege through letters and journal entries of a group of fictitious participants. Their accounts highlight both the despair and triumph that the struggle for Petersburg provided in abundance, as well as the self-deprecating humor that managed to sustain both sides through the worst of the conflict.

"Enhanced by well-chosen, powerful photographs and by quotations from key figures North and South, Passarella's epic poem is unique in conception and brilliant in its evocation of the emotions of Union and Confederate soldiers and their loved ones during the agonizing Siege of Petersburg."      --David Madden, founding director  of the United States Civil War Center, author of the Civil War novel Sharpshooter.

Be sure and pick up a copy!

He was 21 inches long. He just had his 4-month checkup and weighed in at 15 pounds, 5 ounces, and is now 25 inches long. Congratulations J.D. and Chaudron!!

Information for the Field

Recently there has been some discussion on the command where we count two's, open ranks, and whether to form in two columns or four columns when turning to the left or right flanks from a battle line.

1.        The proper command for counting two's is "in each rank, count two's." One of the more common misrepresentations of this command is "by two's, in each rank, count."

 2.        The proper command for opening the ranks is "to the rear open order, march." One of the more common misrepresentations of this command is "to the rear in open order, march."

 3.   According to Hardee's, when we are in a battle line and are told to march to either the right flank or the left flank, if we are in one column, we move to two columns; or if we are in two columns, we move to four columns.  HOWEVER, the commanding officer can add a cautionary command, such as "by the right flank, without doubling, march." So in the future, unless we are specifically told not to double, we double up when in a battle line and told to march to either the left or right flank.

Your obedient servant,

2nd Cpl. Rick Fallaw

Things to Think About

As you all are aware, elections are coming up once again in December. All company and field positions will need to be filled. We need to start looking ahead to who is going fill these positions. Captain Ric Palmer, Lieutenant James Harper, and 1st Sergeant Allan Bright have all indicated that they will not be seeking field reelection. We're going to need some people to "step up to the plate" to lead the unit. Our participation numbers are down this year for events as well as drills. On a bigger scale, the reenacting community as a whole is reporting a decline. Various reasons include finances, work, and lack of interest. We have managed to add only one new member in two years. Hopefully, when the movie “Gods and Generals” comes out this winter, interest in the hobby will grow once again and we can add to our ranks. Below is a list of items that various members have said needs to be addressed:

 1.        Need to reduce the number of maximum effort events. On the current schedule there are 9: Olustee, Bridgeport, Greensboro, Spring Campaign, Resaca, Tunnel Hill, Jonesboro, Battles for Atlanta, and the December business meeting.

 2.        Need to reduce the number of drills. There are currently 8 on the schedule. It has also been suggested to alternate squads for drills, and any member of either squad that wants to participate in all drills is welcome.

 3.        Need to structure drills making proper time allotments for the artillery piece, school of the soldier, school of the company, and learning something new at each drill.

4.   Need to go to some events every other year or possibly just drop  them altogether. Bridgeport, Greensboro, Resaca, Tunnel Hill, and Jonesboro have all been mentioned. Members are getting tired of doing the same events year after year.

5.        Need to introduce some new events into the schedule.

6.        Need to go to an event to support the 11th South Carolina, who has supported us many times in the past. Some suggestions include the Battle of Aiken (weekend after Olustee) and Secessionville (weekend after the Battles for Atlanta).

One thing in particular that I would like to mention to all members is Ric Palmer. Ric has been the backbone of this unit for a long time now. He loves the hobby and has put a lot of time and effort into this unit. Ric is usually the first one at an event, getting there on Thursday or early Friday, and is the last to leave. With him being retired, he has the time that we unfortunate souls that are working don't. So a new captain, unless he can retire before next year, will not be able to put forth the time that Ric does. This means that the captain, or any other officer, may not arrive at an event until Friday night or Saturday morning. This is something that we're going to have to realize with another captain. However, with the proper chain of command, the highest-ranking officer should be able to handle things until the captain arrives.

Probably the most important part of all of this is to remember that this is a hobby. It is supposed to be fun and we're supposed to enjoy it. We all had something that drew us to this hobby or we wouldn't be doing it. If people aren't enjoying themselves, they will quit coming out or maybe just quit altogether. And we don't want that to happen. We are a unit where everyone's voice counts and everyone has an equal say. Let's put the fun back in it.

Your obedient servant,

2nd Cpl. Rick Fallaw

?? 140th Gettysburg ??

Anyone Interested?

Some of you may have gotten this email from Nancy and Jim Mabe, but I thought it might be something to consider as Nancy describes.

While I know that it seems early to be planning this, motels are filling up quickly. I think waiting until December or January will be too late. Maybe we can talk about this at the next reenactment or drill.

We have been doing some homework on places to stay in or around Gettysburg next year. Every place that we've checked in Gettysburg proper is already booked or their rates are over $100.00 per night.

But in looking at the map, it looks as though Chambersburg is really the most direct for us so we've been looking at places there.

At the same exit where we were before, exit 14, there are available:

Holiday Inn Express-$72.00 per night (indoor pool)

Marriott Fairfield Inn-$75.00

Quality Inn & Suites$ 59.00(outdoor pool)

Hampton Inn-$70.00 starting rate for a suite - we didn't check them since we know they have no pool.

2 exits north is Rt. 30 - Lincoln Way east - this is the road to Gettysburg; at this exit are:

4 Point Sheraton - NO VACANCIES

Travelodge- $51.30 per night (no pool listed)

Again, these are places I found.  Let’s discuss whether we want to make this trek next year.
